October Reminds Us About Protection and Safety of the Pets We Love

October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month
October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month

October isn’t just about pumpkins, cozy walks, and Halloween—it’s also National Animal Safety and Protection Month, a time to pause and make sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our furry family members safe, healthy, and happy.

Most of us try to be careful all year long, but it’s easy to miss little things that can make a big difference in a pet’s safety. This month gives us a gentle nudge to take another look at the basics—things like checking ID tags, reviewing microchip info, and walking around the yard or home to see if there’s anything that could cause harm or an escape. Gates get loose, fences shift, and sometimes, without realizing it, we’ve left behind a new hazard for curious paws or whiskers.

Inside the house, this is a great time to double-check where we keep things like cleaning supplies, medications, or even certain houseplants. Pets are clever, and if something smells interesting enough, they’ll try to get to it! Keeping these items high up or in a closed cabinet can prevent a lot of heartache.

Protection includes Emergency Planning

It’s also smart to think about emergency planning. If something unexpected happens—a storm, a sudden illness, or even a power outage—do you know what you’d do for your pets? Keeping a small “go bag” with food, water, a leash, and any needed medications means you can move quickly if you have to. Having a trusted friend or neighbor who can step in if you’re ever unable to care for your pet is also part of good preparation.

Beyond our own homes, this month encourages us to look outward, too. Helping local shelters, volunteering for adoption events, or even just sharing lost-and-found posts online can make a difference in the lives of animals who don’t have someone watching out for them.

At Your Furry Godmothers LLC, we believe safety and compassion go hand-in-hand. Whether it’s checking that a pet’s harness fits right before a walk, making sure food and water bowls are fresh and clean, or offering gentle care for senior and medically fragile pets, every little step counts.
